How US Tax Brackets Work

The US uses a progressive tax system— you don't pay your top rate on all your income. Each bracket only applies to the income within that range. For example, if you're in the 22% bracket, only the portion of your income above $48,475 (for single filers in 2025) is taxed at 22% — everything below is taxed at lower rates.

Marginal Rate vs. Effective Rate

Your marginal rateis the rate on your last dollar of income — this is what people usually mean when they say "I'm in the X% bracket." Your effective rateis your actual total tax divided by your total income — it's always lower than your marginal rate.

State Income Taxes

9 states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Other states have rates ranging from a flat 3.07% (Pennsylvania) to a progressive system peaking at 13.3% (California).
