Why Legal Ages Vary by State

While some legal ages are set federally — like the drinking age (21) and tobacco age (21) — most milestone ages are determined by individual states. This means the age at which you can legally drive, get married, gamble, or sign a contract can differ significantly depending on where you live.

For example, the age of majority (when you legally become an adult for contract purposes) is 18 in most states, but 19 in Alabama and Nebraska, and 21 in Mississippi. The driving learner's permit age ranges from 14 in South Dakota to 16 in New Jersey.
