What Gets Taken Out of Your Paycheck?

When you earn a salary, several deductions reduce your gross pay before you receive your take-home (net) pay:

  • Federal Income Tax — Based on your income, filing status, and the standard deduction. Uses progressive tax brackets.
  • Social Security Tax — 6.2% on wages up to $176,100 (2025 wage base).
  • Medicare Tax — 1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare on wages over $200,000 (single).
  • State Income Tax — Varies by state. 9 states have no income tax. Others range from ~3% to 13.3%.

Note: This calculator does not account for 401(k) contributions, health insurance premiums, HSA contributions, or other pre-tax deductions, which would reduce your taxable income.
